By the 1600s, the English occupied the eastern part of the New World. As reformations and revolutions went on in England, different types of people immigrated to different parts of the New World. Two distinct regions, New England and the Chesapeake region, grew to be different in economy, social and family life, and religious beliefs. The two different way of life created two settlements that contrasted and complemented each other. Though the differences between the settlements of New England and Chesapeake region are many, they are largely due to the different style of life and desires, such as economic and religious freedom, that led the people to leave England. The economy between the New England region and the Chesapeake region were far apart from each other. The Southern region of the New World was known for agriculture because of the rich and fertile soil. In 1611, John Rolfe perfected a way to grow tobacco without the bitter tang and it became a cash crop instantly. Farmers were attracted to the money that was made from growing and selling tobacco. Workers were needed to work for the farmers and since slaves were expensive they were not used until after the 1700s. Instead, indentured servants were often brought over to work the farms. New England was a rocky and hilly area with poor soil and the climate was not suitable for agriculture. Merchants, craftsmen, and fishers were common to the area and trading was important because Boston was a main port harbor. As read in ââ¬Å"Articles of Agreementâ⬠(Springfield, Massachusetts, 1636), plantations in New England consisted of merely forty families which was nothing compared to southern plantations. In History of Virginia, John Smith said, ââ¬Å"The worst [among us were the gold seekers who]with their golden promises madeâ⬠¦there was no talkâ⬠¦but dig gold, wash gold, refine gold, load gold. â⬠Gold was a big attraction for people in the south and the obsession grew over time amongst them. Emigrants that were in the North focused less on gold seeking and more on family management and trade management. Different types of economies also resulted in different family and social life between the two regions. In ââ¬Å"Shipââ¬â¢s List of Emigrants Bound for New Englandâ⬠by John Porter, the emigrants traveled to New England with their family members and some brought along their servants. During the 1600s, because of short lifespan, women gave birth to several children leading to large families moving to New England. On the contrary, in ââ¬Å"Shipââ¬â¢s List of Emigrants Bound for Virginiaâ⬠shows that the majority of people that immigrated to Virginia consisted of men; very few women traveled to Virginia. With fewer women, the population remained small in the South. Family life was more important to the North because of the large Puritan settlement in Massachusetts. On the other hand, due to the large male population in the Chesapeake region, agriculture business was more important than keeping a family together. In addition, the South had many diseases such as malaria, dysentery, and typhoid fever which caused a decrease in members in the Virginia area. Reasons for a large male population in the Chesapeake region also include the laws of primogeniture, which stated that only the eldest son of a family was allowed to inherit land, which left the younger sons helpless. The North was much keener on education than the South due to trading and businesses. In 1636, Puritans founded Harvard College in Massachusetts, which still stands as a highly prestigious college today. Education was more valued in the North while the South home-schooled their children and taught them how to run plantations. Though the College of William and Mary of Virginia was founded in 1693, it remained that plantation and agriculture maintenance was deemed more important. Due to the religious nature of the Puritans, education was valued so that children can read the Bible. Religious freedom was greatly desired by Puritans and one of the main reasons for immigration. Puritans believed that the church should only accept ââ¬Å"visible saintsâ⬠and because King Charles I accepted all of his subjects, they left England for Massachusetts. John Winthrop wrote: ââ¬Å"We must be knit together in this work as one manâ⬠¦We must consider that we shall be as a city upon a hill. The eyes of all people are upon usâ⬠¦if we shall deal falsely with our God in this work we have undertaken, and so cause him to withdraw his present help from us,â⬠in A Model of Christian Charity. Winthrop believed that his followers should stay together in unity and to always remember their religion and to follow it well. Puritans entered the Massachusetts area, ready to pursue religious freedom from the Church. On the other hand, the Chesapeake region consisted of Protestants who followed the Church of England. However, following religion did not become as important to the Protestants until the 1700s. In History of Virginia by Captain John Smith, he mentioned that Smith had to kill one of the captains to stop the settlers from going back to England as the settlers were being unruly. Without unity, the Chesapeake region was hard to maintain order, but the unity between the Puritans was bound by religion and their desire to practice it. In 1643, The New England Confederation, a military alliance, was created between the Massachusetts Bay Colony, New Haven, Connecticut, and Plymouth as a step towards colonial unity. In ââ¬Å"Governor Berkeley and His Council on Their Inability to Defend Virginia Against a Dutch Attack, December 1673â⬠, William Berkeley complained of how settlers in the South were weak and unable to protect themselves. They had no order, hence no unity, and without unity between the emigrants, the society would have problems such as being unable to protect against potential threats. The economy, the social and family life, and the religious beliefs set the New England and the Chesapeake region apart. Though there are specific reasons and events that set these two settlements apart, the key component that influenced the two diverse environments was desire. The people of England migrated because England was not providing for them what they needed or wanted. The New World represented freedom in all aspects of life. Nonetheless, these two settlements, as different as they were, formed the foundation of America. Even today, most of Americaââ¬â¢s agricultural needs are focused in the South while businesses and trading is in the North.

Reviewing Criticisms Feminist Writers Made Of Criminology Criminology Essay Feminism, according to Mitchell and Oakley (1986:3) suggest that it is easier to define feminism in its absence rather than its presence. Delmar (1986) defines it that, a feminist holds that women suffer discrimination because of their sex, that they have needs which are neglected and unsatisfied, and that the satisfaction of these needs requires a radical change. However, he clearly states that in order distinguish feminists or feminism from the multiplicity of those concerned with women issues, feminism should be defined as a field, even though diverse, but women can make no claim to an exclusive interest in or copyright over problems affecting women. Feminist criminology therefore proceeds from the assertion that women have been highly marginalised and are all too often invisible and when they have been the centre of attention this has not been observed and treated with sympathy. At the heart of feminist criminology, a critique of extant criminology lurks for the reasons below, th e failure to theorise or engage in the empirical study of female offending, the neglect of female victimisation and, particularly, male violence against women and the over concentration on the impact of the criminal justice system on male offenders. Carol Smart (1976) raised two crucial areas of concern. These were; that there was a particular danger of studying women separately from men would cause more marginalisation and this would also lead to the perpetuation of a male dominated criminology and the second one was that, increasing academic attention on female crime could have the unintended and undesirable consequence of increasing public and criminal justice attention on these activities. Smart also argued that, women offenders were not only being treated as criminals but also as having transgressed their gender roles. Edwards (1984:213) said, Female defendants are processed within the criminal justice system in accordance with the crimes which they committed and the extent to which the commission of the act and its nature deviate from appropriate female behaviour. Smart questioned the criminology enterprise and led to a considerable debate on feminism. (Edwards, 1981; Heindensohn, 1985; Rafter and Stanko, 1980; Young, 1996) Pat Carlene (1992) described the idea of feminist criminology as neither desirable nor possible. However, Gelsthorpe and Morris (1990) have said that criminology has been a major constraining rather than creative influence for feminist writers and researchers. Another critique, Cain (1989) argued that courts, victims, lawyers, social workers could be objects of investigation however our explanations must reach beyond and encompass all of them, this in a sense argued that feminist criminology is not possible and it disrupts the other categories of criminology itself. Cains argument was that work in theoretical criminology should question the assumptions of traditional criminology and also examine how gender is constructed by the official bodies, however; she was not purely dismissive of feminist criminology. Carlen (1992) wa s similar sceptically however she was arguing for the potential within feminist scholarships which would help in transcending the limitations of criminology as a discipline. On the other hand, the left realist were critical and said critique is not consistent, that is to say, criticising criminology for its real essentialism in treating crime like a meaningful category yet on the other hand using terms like rape and child sexual abuse yet they may also not be subject to the same criticism. (Mathew and Young, 1992) Feminist criminology criticises theoretical criminology because it was constructed by men and for men. It is argued by Valier (2002) that it does not analytically explain the different patterns in crimes carried out by females. He further points out that most of the theories do not analytically explain patterns of crime by females; these theories will only show what the social scientists are finding out presently which is that they do not seek to explain human behaviour as they claim but only explain understandings of male behaviour. This is not good practice because it has instead created a single theoretical canopy for both women and men even when it is clearly evident that their social realistic are very different. (Valier, 2002) Frances Heidensohn (1987) looked at four different characteristics of many of the female offenders which had been the subject of recent research in the past decades. These characteristics would then be used to carry out analytical research on female criminology and also help understand female offending better. The four characteristics that she looked at included; Economic rationality, women were predominantly involved in property crimes which were motivated by the economic concerns. This was different from what the earlier portrayals of Lombroso and Pollak which understood female criminality to be illustrative of irrationality and the influence of biology. Second characteristic was that of heterogeneity of their offences whereby women commit less crimes as compared to men and are less likely to be recidivists or professional criminals which implies that they contribute less to the crime tariffs and also clarifies that crimes committed by males and females derive from different condit ions like social circumstances, differences in opportunities for both men and women and the socialisation process. The third characteristic is fear and impact of deviant stigma. This is whereby the criminalisation process has a differential impact on men and women. This is because female offending is less extensive than male offending, produces a greater sense of stigmatisation. The last characteristic was that of experience of double deviance and double jeopardy. Both Frost and Caulfield have the desire for beautiful things to last forever. Holden Caulfield recalls a time when he and Jane were younger, they would be playing checkers, and Jane would refuse to move her kings from the back row. It wasnââ¬â¢t any kind of a strategy, nor was it for any particular reason, besides the reason that Jane just happened to like the way they look back there. ââ¬Å"She wouldnââ¬â¢t move any of her kings. Heââ¬â¢s saying that this first green of nature is so beautiful, but there is no way to hold on to it no matter how much youââ¬â¢d like to. Both Caulfield and Frost protest the mutability of time. In Holdenââ¬â¢s case, he enjoys going to the museum because it never changes. Everything has to stay the same. Holden likes how a single beautiful moment can be encapsulated behind glass, thus preserved forever. At the museum, a single moment is unaffected by time. Time stands still inside the walls of the museum. Year after year he can go back to the museum and he only thing that has changed is him. When Frost says that a ââ¬Å"leaf subsides to leafâ⬠, heââ¬â¢s describing how time passes and the leaves fall.

We live in the country where we have all different kinds of families, but the traditional family is the strongest one. We need to fight for the traditional family today because it would make a better life for us and our children. Traditional family Is based on a strong foundation, good values and family traditions. First, every family should build their life on the strong foundation.What is the strong foundation for the family? The best foundation for the good family is found In the Bible. God's plan for the family system Is the best. First, we need to show appreciation every day for each other. Romans 12:10 says, ââ¬Å"Be kindly affectionate one to another with brotherly love; in honor preferring one another. ââ¬Å"Second, we must express our admiration, love, and respect for our family members. Romans 13:7 says, ââ¬Å"Render therefore to all their dues: tribute to whom tribute Is due; custom to whom custom; fear to whom fear: honor to whom honor (The Bible 1009). Hat Is traditional family? The traditional family is made up of a father, mother and a couple of children. Anything other than this ideal is a deviation from the normalcy of values. According to this point of view, the family Is a basic unit of society that serves the purposes of socializing the young, regulating sexual activity, procreation, providing physical care for family members, giving psychological support and emotional security to individuals (Bullock 1). A family is not a collection of individuals who happen to live at the same address.They are people who share an intimate and complex connection with one another, being related by marriage, birth or adoption. Together they form meeting larger and more significant than the contribution of one person. Two people, a man and a woman, locked together by love and lifelong relationship. Furthermore, the situation our nation's f amilies are facing is dire, but there Is hope. When the family returns to the original blueprint that God designed, we will begin to see America strengthened. The family can change the nation in one generation if they will follow God's Word.What is a family today? What challenges does being a member of a family present while traditional family structures change? Every family has to struggle to balance the demands of work and children. People need to forgive, so they could be forgiving. Communication is another important value. When people feel they can talk openly about anything ââ¬â popes, dreams, fears, successes or failures ââ¬â all without Judgment, it's encouraging and strengthens the bond (Kruger 1). That's why it is so important not only communicate, but also be a good listener. Communication is the transfer of information, feelings, signals and behaviours and ideas, and as such, is paramount to all relationships. We need far more than just words to communicate effectively. Research has shown people pay far more attention to body language, facial expression, tone and pitch of voice than to spoken word, therefore in the health and social care sector it is vital to be aware of the different ways in which we communicate and the barriers to communication. Failure to communicate effectively may lead to the breakdown of a relationship and ultimately a lack of trust, between the service provider and service user. There are two theories of communication, Tuckmanââ¬â¢s theory states that communication happens in four stages; Forming, Storming, Norming and performing. This can be seen frequently within the health and social care sector, for example between a group of people (family and medical professionals) discussing the care of a dementia sufferer. The group forms to discuss the best plan of action, moves on to storming to share opinions and ideas of what will benefit the patient which leads on to norming once an agreement is reached then finally the performing stage where any necessary actions are taken and the conversation moves forward. While this theory is great for group communication it could fall flat in one to one communication. The second theory is Argyleââ¬â¢s theory of communication. This states communication is Coding, Transmission and Decoding, and at any time the communication can be distorted and interpreted wrong. This must be considered in the health and social care setting, as dealing with such a wide spectrum of people, with a range of different needs is an everyday occurrence. As an example of this theory in action a care worker is explaining the emergency procedure to a new resident but the new resident is hearing impaired so cannot decode the message properly. In order to overcome this barrier and get the transmission across several things should be considered, not only the tone of voice, body language and hand gestures but does the resident have a hearing aid, is it on the right setting, could we use sign language or symbols instead. As a health and social care worker it is your job to make sure everything is understood by the person you are caring for and if communication breaks down you m ust find ways to overcome it. One to one communication is used in many health and social care settings such as a doctor patient consultation, often in this one to one setting personal details are discussed such as illnesses and available treatments. Given the nature of discussion in this setting it is important to make the patient feel at ease, so many factors must be taken in to consideration; the tone and pitch of the doctorââ¬â¢s voice, the doctor should speak firmly and confidently but with warmth.
